Today 63 years ago, The Netherlands were liberated by primarily the Americans and the Canadians. Therefore, we celebrate our liberation every year on May the 5th. This feast is called ‘Bevrijdingsdag’: Freedom/Liberation Day. We used to celebrate our own freedom from occupation and told ourselves on May the 4th, Dodenherdeking or Remembrance of the Dead, that atrocities like the ones Hitler caused, should never happen again. Every year now, there are less people that consciously experienced the Second World War, and this day has gotten an entirely different meaning now. Life is good in the Netherlands and most of the Western World, but in many places, people are not free and do not have the comfort of a safe home and food on the table every day. In the Western World, we should be very aware of the amazing possibilities we have, compared to millions of other inhabitants of our blue marble.
Therefore, I made this animation for all the Bevrijdingsfestivals, depicting the Global Village, because the world is getting so small and smaller each day. It is the collaborative presence of four NGO’s, Warchild, Amnesty, Cordaid en Vluchtelingenwerk (Refugee Work)
This at first might seem like stand up comedy, someone playing the role of a crazy professor, complete with white coat, large glasses and fluffy hair. But then when you keep listening, you start to realize this guy (Marvin Minksy, a pioneer on Artificial Intelligence) is just being himself, talking about the things he uses his time on earth for.
If you don’t know Banksy, get ready to be amazed.
Here’s a very true quote by him.
This is not sci-fi, this is sci-fact! What an incredible machinery!
If you believe Virgin and Google, they’re planning on colonizing Mars in the coming 20 years, through a project called Virgle. I have an underbelly feeling that this is a very serious hoax.
Here’s question 2 of the official Virgle application questionnaire:
- I am a world-class expert in
– medicine and first aid
– Guitar Hero II
Here’s the Google guys making asses of themselves:
An 81 year old man in Australia wanted to commit suicide, so he turned to the internets for some advice. The solution he found and used was (of course) a killer bot! He built the thing and succeeded! I’m so curious to know what the killer bot looked like, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t a picture available yet. What a way to go … pretty cool actually, compared to the more conventional ways of dying. Full article here.
The video below seems unreal, but it looks too well produced to be a spoof. Does anyone know if this is real, and if so, why MTV would make a video like this? The ‘evil’ men in the video sure look and sound like white Americans!
A documentary and a cartoon about Net Neutrality, check ‘m out.
Nokia doesn’t seem like the type of company to risk its reputation by attaching its name to projects and concept bound to fail. For the person that has no understanding of nanotechnology, the concept visualized below seems rather far-fetched. However, if it is theoretically possible, it would open the door to a lot of possibilities. Whatever they’re dreaming up, let’s just wait and see 😉
